 In the world of red carpet style, the Met Gala has been the place for celebrity couples to be seen together. Whatever the theme, many famous pairs have coordinated their looks for the stylish affair. 2019 s camp themed affair, for instance, saw a particularly high number of couples who matched for the event. And the day after 2023’s Karl Lagerfeld themed bash, Vogue is celebrating the spirit of the ball, looking back on the couples’ style moments that still resonate today. If the Met Gala is a place for bold, one of kind fashion to be unveiled, it’s also a place where high profile couples have made their red carpet debuts.  In the 2010s, after a surge of experimentation at men’s fashion shows, male stars at the Met began to adopt a more free wheeling spirit. As Jacobs said, “boring” was no longer acceptable.  At the celebration of Karl Lagerfeld s life and work, there were some memorable appearances on the red carpet. Brittney and Cherelle Griner showed up in matching minimal looks by Calvin Klein; Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade rocked his and hers Prada leather looks. The Met Gala’s red carpet is a place where celebrities are encouraged to pull out all the stops. So long as they honor the year’s specific theme, all fashion rules pretty much go out the window.  Plenty of stars paid homage to the late Karl Lagerfeld at last night’s 2023 Met Gala but look closer, and you’ll find that many guests chose to make bold statements with their choice of jewelry. Typically a finishing touch to the look, many A listers chose to make their accessories the focal point. Particularly, there was no shortage of diamonds some huge and worth millions on the red carpet, all of which shined and dazzled against the paparazzi flashbulbs. Dua Lipa, for one, wore Tiffany & Co.’s new Legendary Diamond necklace, set on platinum; It’s over 200 carats and based on the cut of the iconic yellow Tiffany Diamond worn by the likes of Beyoncé and Audrey Hepburn.  Karl Lagerfeld once joked “normally, I don’t recommend me for wedding dresses they all get a divorce.” But at the Met Gala 2023 a long list of attendees wanted to have a moment as a Karl Lagerfeld bride (admittedly without any risk of a divorce), as the likes of Alexa Chung, Gisele Bündchen, Maya Hawke and Nicola Peltz Beckham were all inspired by his extensive bridal archive. The designer’s Chanel haute couture shows always ended with a bride and it was seen as a real honor to be selected to close the show however, on Monday night, there was no cap on the number of Met Gala brides. There is a long list of supermodels who have been selected in their time to be a Chanel bride, from Inès de La Fressange in the 1980s to Claudia Schiffer throughout the 1990s to Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner.  Rihanna is often the last to walk the steps of the Met Gala, typically arriving fashionably late, and so it’s perhaps no surprise that she took on the role of the final couture bride of the night. The closing look of his Chanel couture shows was always a wedding dress and so it was fitting that Rihanna ended the red carpet proceedings in a custom Valentino gown with a huge train that swept down the steps and a cape covered in 30 giant camellia appliqués made of 500 petals. Last night’s 2023 Met Gala honored the incredible legacy of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld, so it’s no surprise that many of the night’s A list attendees chose to pay homage to his work with their own ensembles. The best dressed of the bunch were those who found distinct ways to honor a signature Lagerfeld look whether that be his collections’ recurring use of pearls, bows, and tweeds, or Karl’s own personal style itself through sleek ties, crisp shirts, and blazers.  The best dressed men of the night, meanwhile, brought bold (and on theme) style statements into the mix. Jeremy Pope’s extra long Balmain cape and train extended down the carpet to reveal a larger than life image of Lagerfeld on it. Model actor Alton Mason also showed up in Karl Lagerfeld as one of the designer’s iconic Chanel brides well, his own distinctive take on one. Jordan Roth also turned himself into a human fan wearing a custom look by Schiaparelli; The fan silhouette was an ode to Lagerfeld’s signature accessory. Of course, the most memorable moment of the night was when Rihanna and A$AP Rocky finally arrived a heavenly white Valentino Haute Couture look complete with a floral cocoon cape for her, and a Gucci look complete with a black blazer, kilt and bedazzled jeans for him.
